The mother of the girl, Mei, is the perfect daughter for her daughter, and a great caregiver for her child. Ming raised Mei to be perfect, but she never anticipated that Mei would change into a Red Panda. She also assumed the worst in some situations, such as when Mei's Tamagotchi saw Devon's drawings, humiliating her publicly. Despite the positive aspects of the new Tamagotchi, Mei is still unsure of how to deal with the Red Panda.
Mei's virtual pet became symbolic of her own growing independence and her desire to live up to Ming's expectations. Ming dismissed Mei's love of the virtual world and criticized her obsession with it, but her statement that her virtual pet would meet her father was the beginning of the connection between the two. Ultimately, Mei's virtual pet turned out to be an expression of her growing attraction to boys and her rebellion.
